<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Okay, time to recap. Things this pink librarian loves:

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">This next book checks all but one of those boxes. Can you guess which one it does not? If you guessed football, you guessed correctly. (Tom Brady, I still love you forever.) So back to Macy McMillan... she's a hearing impaired girl being raised by a single mother whose life is pretty great. But all of that is about to change as her mother plans to remarry a guy with two kids of his own who lives on another side of town. Macy's best friend will no longer be within biking distance, and her new family is not yet fluent in American Sign Language (ASL). Macy can really only imagine a dim future. To make matters worse, Macy's mother insists that she go next door and assist her elderly neighbor in packing up her home for an eventual move into an assisted living facility. Macy has only ever known Ms. Iris to be cranky, and the older woman doesn't know a single sign (unless you count a pretty nasty face scowl as the universal language for 'get-off-my-lawn').
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Yet upon entering Iris' house, Macy discovers rooms painted in beautiful rainbow shades, shelves full of carefully curated books, and the scent of cookies wafting from the kitchen. Iris is a woman with lots of stories to tell, and as the two women learn to communicate through notes and gestures, Macy begins to understand that a long view of time and friendship is the only way to weather the temporary swells and storms of life. This book provides a glimpse into the deaf experience, as well as a lovely perspective on aging and end-of-life issues. Definitely deserving of the various accolades it has so far received, Macy McMillan is a quick and delightful read about a girl who is really like all of us: yearning to be heard and understood.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Want more? The following video shows multiple images and quotes that the author compiled to reveal important elements, themes, and moments of the story. It's just a fun, visual way to explore the story a bit!
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Homemade tees: Iris is an expert baker and cookies sort of become a traded language throughout the story. Especially at her age, this shirt probably sums up Iris' philosophy regarding life and sweets:
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Hey guys, remember how I'm looking for books about diversity? You know how the ALA announces the winners of their various youth media awards every February? I thought to myself, "Hmm... let me see if any award winning books this year perhaps address the experiences of minorities in the US or elsewhere!" Sure enough, I've found another gem! The winner of this year's Pura Belpré Author Award is Lucky Broken Girl and I am a lucky (librarian) girl for having the chance to read it.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Ruthie is a young Cuban-Jewish immigrant whose family moves to NYC in the 1960s in hopes of a better life, away from oppression in Castro's Cuba. She struggles with a language barrier, a mother who misses her home, and a boisterous family full of interesting characters who cannot always 'see' her through the chaotic noise of their lives. Her grandparents emigrated to Cuba from Germany during WWII because of their Jewish heritage - they speak a delightful mix of Yiddish-German-Spanish. Her mother makes both Caribbean pastries and kosher dinners. Her neighbor on one side is from India and teaches her to pray to Shiva, a little girl friend from Belgium gives her endless cream puffs, and a Mexican artist neighbor on the other side introduces her to the paintings of Frida Kahlo. Her life really is a bouillabaisse of flavors and cultures; but everything comes to a screeching halt when she is bedridden as the result of a terrible car accident. For months, Ruthie's life is on hold as she waits to heal from wounds both physical and emotional.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Yet in her waiting, she discovers a new inner strength. In her moments of darkness and anger, her neighbors and family share their sources of light: good books, art kits, snacks smuggled past over-protective mothers, piñatas, prayers to saints and painters, and Cuban cha-cha-cha music. Ruthie emerges as a shining example of female resilience, beauty, intelligence, and ingenuity. Her buoyant and brave family and neighborhood friends provide for all of us an example of how love and courage are all you really need in life. This book is a must read!

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Want more? Here's the book trailer, made by the author herself!

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Homemade tees: one of my favorite tid-bits in this book is the similarity between Ruthie, in her bedridden state, discovering painting and her connection with Frida Kahlo as a bedridden artist. Therefore, this t-shirt seems perfect for any fan of Lucky Broken Girl.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">There are only so many books or movies or commercials that have made me tear up and cry in my life.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Just kidding. I'm full of lies. I cry really easily and probably 234,098,234 different things have evoked this reaction from me, and sometimes I purposefully watch YouTube videos of soldiers coming home and surprising their families just to have a good ugly cry. I am ridiculous.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">But this book made me cry properly. It did it in all the best ways and for all the best reasons. (See also, "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas." That one resulted in me having to move to a fresh spot on my couch because I had significantly dampened one arm-rest.) This historical fiction novel weaves together the seemingly unconnected lives of three refugee children: Josef escaping Nazi Germany during WWI, Isabel attempting to flee from Cuba in the 1990s, and Mahmoud, a Syrian boy on the move in 2015. Each chapter rotates from child to child, and each face surprisingly similar perils and challenges. Without giving away the beautifully satisfying ending, the reader will come to discover that their lives intersect in the most meaningful of ways. It reminds me of the clich<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">é<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">d (and truly preposterous) saying, "Everything happens for a reason." But again, in the most wonderful way and with lovely literary artfulness (is this a word?).
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">The subject matter is definitely heavy at times, but very timely given that estimates show that 5.1 million Syrians have fled their country since 2011 and another 6.3 million Syrians are displaced within their country. Families fleeing their homes because of political, civil, or religious unrest is nothing new - but for many kids growing up in the US, it's a somewhat foreign idea. Fiction can communicate real truth, and Refugee conveys the massive challenges of human migration while also revealing the human heart at the center of each child's journey. These stories may be made up, but the realities behind them were and are not.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">This book has already been sitting on best seller lists, and has racked up its fair share of starred reviews and awards, but I suspect it's not done yet. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see it take a few more major awards before all is said and done. It's a fabulous story for any middle grade reader and I'm excited to share it all around town!
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Want more?
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Alan Gratz is no stranger to the historical fiction genre. If you think this one sounds good, you should also check out Prisoner B-3087 and Projekt 1065 - both good books in their own rights!
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Is this my first time reviewing a collection of short stories? I think it might be! This book is another I read on my quest for summer reading options that address diversity. What an absolute winner! PLUS, it's a nominee for this year's Delaware Diamond book award, which means I'm encouraging Delawarean children to read it anyway. ;o ) This delightful book includes short stories by:

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">With a line-up like that, how could I not read this book? As mentioned previously, our school is looking to expose students to the broader idea of diversity as something that we all have. Just because you are Caucasian in a predominantly white area does not mean you lack diversity as an individual. Likewise, a school filled with Muslim children is still diverse in the many ways that each child might approach political issues or math problems. We are all unique in some way.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">So with short stories about Hispanic ballers, Middle Eastern travelers, young crushes, alcoholic parents, loss and heartache and stereotypes and coming-of-age, there is something here for everyone. If the most controversial thing I could think to say about this book is that in one story, the word "ass" is used one time, I think we're doing a great job. I believe this book would be perfect for reluctant readers, or any person who only has a few minutes to read while sitting in a doctor's office or on the toilet. We need books like this! Furthermore, this book is published in large part because of the phenomenal work of the people at We Need Diverse Books (and we really do, too). Because really, every child should be able see themselves in the pages of a book - or become more aware of those outside of their tiny part of the universe as well.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Want more?

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Here's a little tidbit about how this book came to be:

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Homemade tees: with a book that includes many stories, it's hard to sum up this tome in a single tee. So instead, I found one that hints at my favorite, most hilarious part of one of the stories. You'll have to read this great collection in order to get my silly reference.

Guys, can we talk about how much I love Jason Reynolds? (Is he the next Walter Dean Myers... we shall see.) Also, anyone who knows me knows I love a good Schneider Family Book Award winner. So this book is the perfect formula for "a book Katelynn will love."

Set in Virginia (the rural version) in the summer of (insert recent year here), Genie and Ernie have to spend several weeks with their grandparents so that their marriage-on-the-rocks parents can spend alone time fixing their relationship. The boys are used to the streets of their native Brooklyn, not the hills and knolls of the South. To make matters even more complicated, their grandfather is completely blind and never really ventures outside of his house. While inside, you'd never guess that Grandpop is visually impaired; however, outside, a simple thing like walking through the grass can be an anxiety-inducing activity. Genie always thought his Grandpop was pretty brave, but some of his thinking shifts when he realizes how limited his grandfather's life really has become.

A young girl down the street inspires the boys to venture into the woods, where they uncover other family secrets about their deceased veteran uncle, and the tension between their dad and his father. Needless to say, there is a lot to be unpacked in this generational story about young African American boys figuring out how to function in the world and in their own family. The book addresses what true bravery really is, and how to be courageous in our relationships with each other. It will make you smile, and cry, and long for more pages at the end (why must good books always end??). It was a five out of five stars book for me, and I can't wait for students to read it too!

PS - it won a bunch of other awards too. Like... a bunch.

Kirkus Award Finalist, Coretta Scott King Author Honor book, NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work - Youth/Teens, and a bunch of starred reviews.

Want more? There are so many great videos of Jason Reynolds accepting awards and talking about reading, and just being generally awesome. But check out this one about why he thinks it's important that kids read:

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">
Every year, our school chooses books for students to read for summer reading. We're looking for about six options for our students this summer, and we'll be reading books for the next several months in a hunt for the best ones. Our theme this year is diversity, and not just racial diversity. You see, diversity is really all of the various parts of us that make us unique - it could be race, but also religion, gender, sexual orientation, cultural upbringing, languages spoken, adventures experienced, educational attainment, socioeconomic status, physical disabilities, learning styles, and so much more. Therefore, we want books that will give our students windows into the lives of other kids and teens around the world, and which will also provide some of them with mirrors to see that they are not alone in their experiences.

And so, we now enter Home of the Brave. I was looking for books that have characters from other places, and this book fits the mold. Kek lived in Darfur, Sudan (Africa) with his mother, father, and brother. But after tragedy strikes, only Kek and his mother survive. They become separated and Kek travels to the US to live with an aunt and cousin in Minnesota. Equal parts haunting and sad, heartwarming and funny, the story narrates how Kek learns to find his way in a strange new land. Thinking that the "washing machine" will help his aunt with her pile of dishes, he puts all of the plates and cups in only to find that the agitator breaks them all. Another young friend has to tell him that a washing machine for clothes and a dishwasher are two different appliances. Kek eventually discovers, not too far from the urban metropolis where he lives, a small farm with a forlorn cow. From a family of herders, Kek has finally found the familiar: a sad cow who just needs a bit of attention and who becomes like family. Despite struggling with a language barrier, missing his parents, attempting to acclimate to a whole new culture, and living with extended family with their own share of issues, Kek finds his own sort of success in the Home of the Brave.

The cover of the copy I read was so terrible. I thought to myself, "What kid is going to want to pick up this book?" Monochrome and sort of strange illustration, I had a negative initial reaction. But after only a few pages, I was hooked in this story. It is honestly one of the best books I've read about the refugee experience, and such an accessible story as it deals with common issues like loss, the desire to fit in, and friendship in unexpected places. I was so excited to discover that the book has been re-released with a fresh cover and I'm keeping all my fingers crossed that this book makes it to our final cut of summer reading options!

Want more? If you want to hear the author talk about the book in her own words, check out the following video!

Homemade tees: there are not a lot of shirts you can find with "Home of the Brave" on them without there also being American flags, bald eagles, and assault rifles on them. (This seems like a whole other blog post waiting to happen...) So instead, I'm going the route of diversity. How can you celebrate what makes your experience unique? How can we also find common ground with those around us? This shirt is a fun place to start!
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01400741614506117068noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5711034944491899775.post-19297033758994276922017-09-19T04:30:00.000-07:002017-09-19T04:30:14.821-07:00The Seventh Most Important ThingThe Seventh Most Important Thing by Shelley Pearsall (ISBN: 978-0-553-49728-1)
Sometimes a book comes along that reminds you that you just love good books about real life. This is one of those books. Subtle, uncomplicated, sweetly told, predictably heartwarming. It's also an interesting piece of history about James Hampton's folk art - a piece of Americana that I was unaware of until reading this book.

The story goes that Arthur Owens throws a brick at a man's head, and ends up in juvie court to discover his sentence. Rather than return to jail, he is sentenced to community service helping the very man he attacked. The Junk Man, aka: Mr. Hampton, is the neighborhood quirk though. He travels the streets with a rickety shopping cart, picking through trash cans to take tidbits that others have discarded. Arthur is definitely not excited about helping with this rubbish-collecting endeavor or what it will do for his reputation. To make matters worse, at his first day on the job, he's given a difficult list of the Seven Most Important Things to find: light bulbs, foil, mirrors, pieces of wood, glass bottles, coffee cans, and cardboard. Mirrors aren't just hanging out in everyone's garbage cans. For weeks, Arthur continues to trudge along, collecting these items.

But it's one day that Arthur finally discovers what all of his collecting is for. Mr. Hampton is building, within a garage behind a tattoo shop, a creation beyond description. The Throne of the Third Heaven is pieces of what he believes Heaven will look like - but made out of... you guessed it... the Seven Most Important Things. Light bulbs covered in pieces of sparkly foil and cardboard attached to chairs to look like angels' wings. It's something to behold and Arthur begins to realize that his hours digging through refuse have paid off in a beautiful way.

The ending of the book I'll protect - but I'll say that reading about a troubled young boy forming a tender relationship with an eccentric aging gentleman was really a treat. Anyone with a middle grade reader should encourage them to try this book, and then do a bit of Google image searching to learn more about the real artist behind the story. Yay!

Well, one of my favorites has struck again! Kwame Alexander is really on fire with his YA-free-verse-lyric-filled-multi-format novels (this is a phrase I just invented to describe his genre). This story is told in free verse, but also includes lyrics and homages to famous songs, text chains, non-punctuated dialogue threads, and an adventure to Ghana.

Blade is the son of a famous rock-and-roll god: Rutherford Morrison*. This means he pretty much can buy whatever he want and his family's name appears in tabloid magazines weekly. But his dad is famous more now for debauchery and public embarrassment than notable music or humanitarian endeavors. Blade is always left in fear that he'll wake up to a dead father or more public shame. To make matters worse, his mother is already dead, and his sister cannot seem to understand why he doesn't want the life he's been given.

A quest for self-discovery leads him to the fact that his biological parents might not be the ones he grew up with, and he journeys half way around the world to discover his true self. Picture the scene:
"When we get/ to the point/ where vehicles/can no longer/ pass,/ Elvis explains/ that we will walk/ a trail/ then hike/ a mountain,/ cross three canopies,/ above/ the rainforest/ and arrive/ at the village."

This novel is full of beautiful language, enlightening descriptions of a people far away, and the realization that life isn't about what you have, but who you share it with. Blade journeys from love to hate to understanding. His father journeys from life to addiction to death and acceptance. I have a few complaints about the way this story evolved - especially a romance in the early chapters. Some readers may have a hard time resonating with a person whose life is so full of opulence and wealth (who can just fly to Africa for an indeterminate amount of time?). But overall, it conveys a strong message at the end: "Hope never drowns... Hope swims."

Here is a spiffy video of Kwame Alexander explaining how he arrived at such a music-filled book and what really gets his groove going:

OR you might enjoy one of the poems from Solo being performed by Randy Preston... it's pretty sweet.
This summer, I read a series of three books, and rather than write three blogs, I'm just going to write the one. Because I'm lazy. And probably no one cares that much if I switch it up.

The Pledge by Kimberly Derting (ISBN: 978-1-4424-2201)

In Ludania, the population is segmented by status, and each stratum has their own language. For example, the merchant class speaks a completely different language than the politicians. Speaking another language is completely illegal, and even looking up while someone is speaking a different language is punishable by death. There is a common language: Englaise, but we meet in the first chapter a very uncommon girl. Charlaina keeps secret that she can actually understand every language she hears, and touching ancient manuscripts or symbols reveals the meaning for her as well. In a world in which this could spell her end, she hides her truth carefully, even from close friends.

Ruling Ludania is a queen with unspeakable powers - the ability to kill by simply raising her hand in the direction of a person. But not everyone wants to serve this queen, and an underground rebellion is gaining power. What are they looking for? An ancient bloodline that might usurp the current monarchy - someone who could truly govern the land fairly.

Now here is where I have to pause. If I'm going to talk about three books, how do I not give away important plot twists? How do I keep you interested in an entire series without ruining book one or two?

Well I'll tell you this - of course Charlaina survives! She's the main character (sort of like how you know that Harry Potter isn't going to die because the entire series bears his name). You know that she's eventually going to come in contact with royals, and have to choose sides. You know that secrets involve lies and sometimes the truth gets out.

Don't want spoilers? Don't read on... because... this story evolves into...
What if her essence remains to both torment and advise the next leader? Charlaina has to figure out how to stay true to herself when Sabara is constantly clawing at the back of her mind, trying to regain power. She struggles daily to remember that there is good and light in the world, that she loves who she loves and not who the queen previously preferred. Charlaina also has to make sacrifices to save her family and friends when they are constantly under attack because of her position. Furthermore, she has to figure out how to navigate political alliances and nation-building when previously her biggest concern was bullies in the school yard. What will she become if she starts to use the same murderous tactics as the previous monarch?

Still curious what becomes of our fearless heroine? Then you'll have to read the action-packed conclusion:
She wants technology to flourish, and the impoverished to more than just survive, for children to be free of slavery and orphanhood, and for those with magic to be safe in the open. All of these must come at a cost - and other countries exact payments the way Shylock demands a pound of flesh. Charlaina is advised in several directions, and none of them seem compatible with the desires of her heart. So she ventures out, putting herself at risk, in order to save Ludania from what she believes is its greatest threat: dictatorship.

Don't worry - lots of people die, sure - but the ending of this series is still satisfying in its own way. There is nothing worse than sticking with a series for three (or four... or seven) books only to find that it ends poorly. This isn't one of those series. Also, there are some pleasant kisses throughout. Nice tender ones. Nothing too avert-your-eyes-PG-13-warning for readers who just want a story without the ooo-la-la. Overall, I'd highly recommend this fun series from Derting.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Okay, so I just reviewed Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon earlier this month, but I wanted to read her other book right away since I loved the first so much! Another beautiful cover, another story told in vignettes, I was just delighted to pick it up. I really did like this book too. As much as Everything, Everything? No... but it was still a really solid read.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Natasha is a Jamaican American who was born on the island. Daniel is a Korean American who was born in the States. But both are dealing with the issue of straddling two worlds - parents at home who want their children to have respect for their culture, versus their own teenage inner desire to just fit in. They meet by chance on Natasha's worst day ever - she and her family are about to be deported because of her father's poor choices. Daniel, however, is having the kind of day where it seems like the universe is causing everything to come up roses. The initial spark of an interesting conversation, a bold proposal, a shared lunch, the confiding of secrets... all things culminate in a day that totally changes both of them forever. Can poetic Daniel persuade scientific Natasha to fall in love with him before she leaves the country forever?
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">I won't give away the most important plot points or surprises - or even ruin the ending. But you know that feeling when you're getting closer and closer to the end of a book and you're worried that things are just not going to be resolved in the way you want them to? Then sometimes they just aren't. And you're a little bummed... almost like you spent all of those hours reading for nothing and you can't shake the unfinished feeling. That's how I felt with this book... until literally the last six words. Then all was right in the world. The. Last. Six. Words.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">It's a story you might like - especially if you love New York City, love stories that involve multicultural characters and references, or like a little bit of loaded-topic-exploring in your fictional reading material (aka: extramarital affairs, racism, immigration, birth order stereotypes, poverty, loss and grieving, drunk driving, etc.).
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Want to hear from the artist who created the beautiful cover for this book? Check it out!
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">And here's the author herself talking about this second book, the art, the format, the characters, and some of her difficulties in writing a book that takes place entirely within the span of 12 hours (with a tiny cheat at the end).

As I was doing my end-of-the-year library inventory and scanning every book on the shelves, I came across this one and just figured I'd take it home to read over the summer. The cover was appealing, the back blurb sounded interesting, so I put it in my pile. I'm so glad I did! It's another dystopia book, but sometimes these books involve regimes utilizing extreme technologies, or even repressed groups developing some kind of fantastic-supernatural abilities. This one instead discussed what might happen to a gene pool of the wealthy without enough genetic diversity. Yay for something different!

Gaia Stone is a midwife, and the daughter of a midwife, living in the poor area of Western Sector 3 - outside of the Enclave and next to Unlake Superior. Only the wealthy and powerful can live in the Enclave, and residents of the outer sectors have difficult lives and further must submit to the baby quota. Every month, each midwife must give the first three babies she delivers to the nursery inside of the Enclave. These babies are raised inside of the walls, adopted by wealthy families. This is supposedly to show how the Protectorate cares for those outside of the walls too. However, the reason for the baby quota is really that the families inside of the walls are becoming inbred with side effects like hemophilia and other defects. Those mating with their close family members are convicted of genetic crime, and not everyone inside of the walls feels that the Protectorate is doing enough. Gaia's mother and father are arrested and this becomes the catalyst for Gaia to find out what is really happening within and outside of the walls. Aided by Leon, the adopted son of the Protectorate himself, she seeks to figure out the code her mother used to mark babies to save both her family and perhaps her entire sector.

Anyone who enjoyed "The Giver" by Lois Lowry might also really like this book too. They both include many of the same themes and plot points. Furthermore, this book touches on the topics of adoption, genetic disorders, and the problems with dictatorship, torture, and surveillance. Overall, a solid book that's actually a part of a trilogy, the rest of which I can't wait to read! Want someone else's review? Check it out!
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">I know that I am late to the game with this one, seeing as how it was published in 2015 and has been heavily marketed by Scholastic during their book fairs, and other places too, I'm sure. But I'm glad I finally picked it up off my nightstand and gave it a go. My favorite genre is totally dystopia, and this falls right into the mix with some of my other favorites.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">To start, Mare Barrow is growing up in a world in which common red blooded people are disenfranchised and poor because of their lack of special abilities. Silver blooded elite who have evolved to have these special abilities are really the ruling class, and they hold all of the power over the reds. Mare is about to be conscripted into the army when she meets a random stranger in a pub. This stranger gets her a job at the palace, and on her first day of work, she realizes that she'll be serving during the Queenstrial. This is the event which happens when the eldest prince is ready to choose a wife. Mare realizes two things: the stranger she saw in the pub was really prince Cal, who will be selecting a wife, and she is in grave danger. In a chance turn of events, Mare finds herself falling into the arena where the daughters of the most powerful houses are competing for the prince and as her life is in grave danger, she is able to summon electricity from her hands. She is a never-seen-before red... with silver powers. You can perhaps imagine where the story goes from there.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Will Mare be able to change the world in which she's grown up? Will the silvers realize they should view their red brothers and sisters with a bit more respect? Will there be a love triangle? You'll have to read this book to find out!
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">PS - did anyone else read "The Pledge," by Kimberly Derting? If you did and liked it, you'll totally like "Red Queen" since they're essentially the same book. OR, if you read "Red Queen" and like it... try the rest of the series (duh), and then try "The Pledge." Okay, you get the idea.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Here's a clip of the author talking about her book and it's chances of being turned into a movie!

I have tried starting this paragraph four times, and I don't even know where to begin. The cover! The clever format! The emotional moments of this book which caused me to use up 7 tissues between 10:30 and 12:15pm! The twist!

Basically I loved Everything, Everything and everything about it.

I was told about this book by a number of people, and it's been creating buzz in both entertainment and literary circles. I finally got around to reading it and have had the story re-running through my head ever since. I'm not going to lie - I do like a smidge of romance in my books - but I am not a romance-a-holic. It's not my favorite genre, and there needs to be something else holding me to the story. Like in The Fault in Our Stars by the wonderful John Green. Is there romance? Yes. But is there a depth to the story and characters that also holds you there? Yes. So it is with Everything, Everything. It made me laugh, and cry, and feel all the feels, and surprised me as well.

Madeline cannot leave her house because of a rare disease in which she's essentially allergic to the entire world. She lives in a home that boasts a hospital grade HVAC system that completely clears the air of all toxins, and people cannot enter the front door without going through a special airlock. Madeline's mother, who is actually a doctor, as well as an in-home nurse are her only companions. But all of that is disrupted when a new family moves in next door, and she lays her eyes on the mysterious teen aged son Olly. They begin communicating using a bundt cake (yes, don't ask) and window sign-language. Eventually, she's able to text and e-mail with Olly, and her longing for friendship and the outside world grow. I can't say more... because that would start to ruin important parts of the plot... and I would never, ever, ever do that. Librarian's honor.
Madeline loves architecture and at one point designs a restaurant where an astronaut might dine.

I could go on, but you should really read this book to see for yourself what all of the buzz is about.

Speaking of buzz, there is also a movie. I haven't seen it yet, but here's the trailer from YouTube. BUT WAIT - stupid movies... stupid trailers... they include spoilers! If you don't want to spoil the book, stop watching at 1:37. That is all.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">This book is the third and final book in the Young Elites series, and provides readers with not only the ending to Adelina Amouteru's plot line, but also the fate of the entire world of Kenettra, and the Skylands and Sealands. The Young Elites (from both the Daggers and Roses) have shifted in their alliances and as Adelina is now the conquering queen of many lands, she has made many enemies along the way. Her friendships have mostly dissolved, and even her own sister is in hiding. Yet, the marked ones who survived the blood plague start to realize that their special abilities are actually creating rifts in the universe between the land of the mortal, and the worlds of the gods. Adelina's powers are actually poisoning her mind, and she is not alone. The marked must work together to try and save the world as they know it.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">This book is super dark! There are whole chapters in which Adelina's mind is a swirling soup of chaos and despair; voices whisper evil to her mind as she continues her rampages of pain and torture on the people she has enslaved. It's an amazing world that Marie Lu has created, but not an easy protagonist to live with. There are hints of romance thrown in, as well as some action and survival. But this book is solidly in the camp of fantasy, and the ending is sure to satisfy readers who have stuck with the series this long.

Side note, if you like this, you'll totally like Graceling by Kristin Cashore. It's been a long time favorite of mine and a series I've recommended to a bunch of readers!
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">This book falls into the genre of science fiction with a slight smidge of romance. The premise is that in the future, colorful marbles have started showing up all around the world, mostly concentrated in urban areas, and hiding in any number of places. People have hunted for and found these spheres in order to own pairs of matching colors. You see, when a person holds a matching pair of marbles to their temples, a magic ability transfers to the holder. Teal: fall asleep easily; slate gray: enhanced singing ability; cranberry: better looking; mustard: high intelligence. As you can imagine, the wealthy are willing to pay exorbitant amounts to obtain rare marbles, and thus increase their standing in the world. Sully is a kid growing up in New York with a single mom who has just lost her job, and finding and selling marbles is the only way they survive. Hunter is a homeless girl, alone in the world, with a knack for finding hidden spheres. So the two team up together to locate rare marbles.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">The end up finding something unheard of: a larger marble that's gold - the only one of its kind. This marble is special though - it actively helps the holder locate its pair. A marble entrepreneur wants the gold... the two teens want cold hard cash... but what do the marbles want? You'll have to read Burning Midnight to find out!
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">I grabbed this book off of the "New Releases" shelf at our local public library because the premise seemed interesting to me. It took a while to get into the real crux of the story, but the ending is something I didn't see coming at all. For readers who enjoyed I am Number Four or The Fifth Wave or for anyone who has secretly wished for the magical abilities of Harry Potter's wand or Clary's stele, this book will be right up your ally.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Before I can possibly tell you anything about this book (series), I have to tell you two short stories from my real life:
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">
(1) If you ask me what book was the first to really get me hooked into reading, my answer would be the entire Nancy Drew series by "Carolyn Keene" (or the group of authors who used this pen-name). I. Loved. Those. Spy. Girl. Books. I would sit on my couch, drinking Yoo-Hoo banana milk, and reading each volume for hours. I fell in love with libraries and librarians when the children's librarian at my local public library informed me that they could borrow more of these swell books for me from other branches, seeing as how I had exhausted the collection at my own branch already. So Nancy Drew... I'm a forever fan. (Also, do this many crimes in real life really involve chloroform?)
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">(2) My daughter discovered a book and TV series about two kids named Charlie and Lola about a year and a half ago, written by this lovely British author named Lauren Child. The two main characters, while strangely parent-less, are fantastic and so quirkily (now a word) clever. My little loved them, and so did I. We've read all the books, we've watched all the shows. We all love strawberry milk, just like Lola.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">So now I tell you that Lauren Child has created the next young Nancy Drew heroine and you can understand why I might be a bit enthused. Ruby Redfort is 13 years old, easily the most brilliant kid in her small coastal town (although her friend Clancy Crew isn't far behind... PS - CLANCY CREW!! #FanGirlNerdAlert), and loves cracking codes. She loves banana milk (BANANA MILK!! #MyLiteraryBFF). She sees details that others miss, and these combined character traits lead her to be discovered by both a spy agency (Spectrum) and some crooked bad guys wishing to steal a famous piece of art which is soon to debut at her local art museum. Spectrum recruits her as an agent when they need an insider for the upcoming museum showing being hosted by Ruby's brilliantly-stupid-but-very-rich parents. With the help of an agent-turned-butler named Hitch, Ruby has to outsmart the thieves and keep her new agent identity a secret before the Jade Buddha is stolen. She uses wits and gadgets, wears snarky t-shirts (T-SHIRTS!!), is loyal to her friends, and has totally won my heart.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">I am a librarian, so I always advocate for people to get books for free from their local libraries. But I actually used some of my Christmas money (five months later) to buy this book after reading the library's copy just because I wanted to own it for someday-when-my-five-year-old-can-read-it. That is years away, folks. But I bought it anyway. That should tell you how much I love this character. I'm already reading book two of the series, and I actually googled banana syrup to see where I could find some. I think I need a glass of my childhood.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

I really do love talking about books!! So even though I'm done with my Master's (woot woot!!) and even though I'm still a busy #LibraryLady, I think I shall continue on.

So here's a quick reading update:

My school has decided on our six summer reading options for summer 2017:
Fish in a Tree by Lynda Hunt
Legend by Marie Lu
Nimona by Noelle Stevenson (featured on this blog!)
Undefeated: Jim Thorpe and the Carlisle Indian School Football Team by Steve Shenkin
Temple Grandin: How the girl who loved cows embraced autism and changed the world by Sy Montgomery
The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind (young reader's edition) by William Kamkwamba

I am the head of the committee who picks these books, and so I have the pleasure of doing a lot of reading in preparation for our final decisions. I have to say that I am pumped about our options this year. Three fiction, three non-fiction. All different types of protagonists, and a graphic novel in there too. Inspiring stories to start meaningful discussions about the importance of not making assumptions about people with first getting to know them. It's going to be wonderful.

Now I just need to create promotional videos for each book, lesson plans for students, and do book talks with close to 1,000 students in four buildings! #MyJobIsAmazing

Do you know what else I read recently that I really liked?
Sachiko: A Nagasaki Bomb Survivor's Story by Caren Stelson.
I thought it would be all dry, and non-fiction-y. But it was really a powerful story about a woman whose life was completely destroyed by a bomb that had nothing to do with her. And you know what she spent the rest of her life fighting for? (Her cancer-ridden, lonely-because-her-family-all-died life...) Peace. She fought for peace. Wow, sometimes humans are pretty amazing.

I'm currently reading Will Grayson, Will Grayson by John Green and Heartless by Marissa Meyer (my more favorite of the various YA Meyer authors). I'm SURE there will be glowing reviews to come!

Never fear... my next blog posting shall have more hyperlinks and pictures and advice on where to buy over-priced t-shirts. Next time!
assist The Institution, she shows up on the doorstep of villain Lord Ballister
Blackheart and offers her services. At
first, Blackheart is not persuaded, but quickly comes to see how a
girl-turned-shark might be a helpful asset.
So together, they set off to try and dethrone the Director of the
Institution of Law Enforcement and Heroics, and her right-hand-man, Sir Ambrosius Goldenloin (aka: the hero of
the story). A native of Brooklyn, Ichiro is torn out of his element when
his mom announces she’s going on a work trip to her native Japan and taking him
with her. The product of an American dad
and a Japanese mom, Ichiro is a bit of an outsider in both countries – and the
death of his dad when Ichiro was young doesn’t make finding his identity any
easier. Once in Japan, Ichiro’s practically-a-stranger
Japanese grandfather starts teaching him about the history and myths of the small
island nation, including how the gods warred with one another and created the
islands in their wake. The two also visit Peace Park, the memorial site of the
Hiroshima bombing. As he starts to
understand Japan’s past, and the role that war and peace play on the human
psyche, Ichiro embarks on an adventure to come to peace with his own warring
emotions. Follow him on his epic journey
to find the gods and himself.

prefers to escape into the world of fictional characters than face people in
real life, then let me present Jane, the
fox & me. This achingly
beautiful graphic novel focuses on Hélène, a young girl who is constantly
teased at school, feels she has no friends, and is becoming irrationally concerned about her weight. These are
the real-life issues many teen girls face today – and this story addresses them
head on. By juxtaposing the story of
Jane Eyre with her own life, Hélène seeks to understand why she feels as
miserable as she does, and if anyone could ever love her. Gray and black pencil and charcoal drawings bring
Hélène’s world and emotions to life, while pages of vibrant colors and hues
intersperse to illustrate the life of Jane and a mysterious fox. With an ending you might not expect, Jane, the fox & me is an important
book for any young female reader to experience.

Some are friendly, some are angry, some are benign. Ghosts, depending on the story and culture,
have many personalities and affect the living in different ways. Catrina, who has recently moved to the
Californian town of Bahía de la Luna with her family, is very frightened by the
ghosts who dwell in the local Mission.
Her sister Maya, on the other hand, is enthusiastic about meeting these apparitions
and behaves recklessly to get even the smallest peek of the deceased specters. The big problem is that Maya’s cystic
fibrosis flares up when she becomes overly excited, and thus ghost hunting
falls squarely in the category of “dangerous activities.” Can Catarina find a way to embrace her sister’s
enthusiasm? Can Maya participate in the
Día de los Muertos festivities without ending up in the hospital? Ghosts is

Two problems: First, Astrid is only old enough to skate for the junior
team, the Rosebuds, and second, she’s a terrible skater. But make that three problems – her best
friend Nicole doesn’t want to come to summer skate camp with her. Astrid has to decide if she’ll branch out on
her own and try something new to follow her dream, or if she’ll stick with the safety
of a friend she’s known forever. Told in
rainbow color, and through witty word choice, this graphic novel about a girl

For many people, Africa is a faraway place full of turmoil and poverty. Likewise, the 1970s are a bygone era of polyester and disco. However, this graphic novel (or bandes dessinées) <span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">by <a href="https://thebrownbookshelf.com/2010/01/31/marguerite-abouet/" style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;" target="_blank">Marguerite Abouet<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"> beautifully captures the 1970s in Côte d'Ivoire in such a way that it is real and vibrant and current for readers today. Aya is a young girl living in Abidjan, and she and her friends all long for independence and a taste of adulthood. She tells her friends, “I don’t want to wind up in the ‘C’ series… combs, clothes, and chasing men,” and admits to her father, “I want to be a doctor!” Sliding back and forth between the lives of three different girls, and covering such topics as young love, teen pregnancy, female empowerment, education and cultural taboos, this story will resonate with teen girl readers around the globe. Aya’s problems and aspirations are juxtaposed with the exciting opportunities for and great struggles of the residents of Jop City, and turning the pages through colorful images of the Ivory Coast and its diverse characters is a delightful experience. Don’t miss Aya!
