Some are friendly, some are angry, some are benign.  Ghosts, depending on the story and culture, have many personalities and affect the living in different ways.  Catrina, who has recently moved to the Californian town of Bahía de la Luna with her family, is very frightened by the ghosts who dwell in the local Mission.  Her sister Maya, on the other hand, is enthusiastic about meeting these apparitions and behaves recklessly to get even the smallest peek of the deceased specters.  The big problem is that Maya’s cystic fibrosis flares up when she becomes overly excited, and thus ghost hunting falls squarely in the category of “dangerous activities.”  Can Catarina find a way to embrace her sister’s enthusiasm?  Can Maya participate in the Día de los Muertos festivities without ending up in the hospital?  Ghosts is a delightful addition to Raina Telgemeier’s canon of graphic novels for middle-grade readers, and especially fun for anyone who loves a little bit of otherworldly adventure.

This book is too new to have won any awards yet, but many of Raina Telgemeier's other books have been lauded for their excellence.  Check out her site for more information!

HOMEMADE TEES:
One of the most famous characters associated with the Day of the Dead happens to be a female skeleton, La Calavera Catrina.  Honor both Cat from the book and this classic Mexican icon by getting a shirt that features "the elegant skull":
